Let’s celebrate Earth Holiweeks.
And it will be happy to generously give you back the abundance that it is capable of.
The Sahara desert used to be green. It is known as the African Humid period. Around 6000 years ago something happened to the humid period there, and Africa lost what it had in order to maintain its lush green landscape. What happened? What was lost? Can we make it humid again?
There is no “official” answer, why it happened. It was too abrupt to be explained by the slow moving geometry of the arrangement of sun and earth.
During that time the Sahara had very rich flora and fauna. It is strongly believed that flora and fauna thrive where it is green and humid. What if it was the other way around? What if animals make the landscape green and humid?
It makes perfect sense, because according to the accepted Gaia theory life forms are coevolved with the environment to bring the right condition for life to thrive. Before the advent of animals, the first plants grew only near the shores. The interior of the continent(s) used to be dry and red like the surface of Mars, because it turns out that rain and wind are created by life forms.
Animals help to distribute microbiomes and seeds to make land fertile and green. Especially ungulates (animals like cattle, horse, camel, deer etc.) can spread well microbiome with fungi spores with their hoofs and manure to prepare the infrastructure (mycellium) for grasslands to grow. Predators chase ungulates to do their job well.
In the place where we eliminated all the predators, ecology suffers there. For example, the Yellowstone park started to thrive again when the wolves were reintroduced there. In places where it is not possible to have predators, humans have to do the role of predators, because the majority of ungulates do not move themselves for long distances eagerly.
At the time when the African Humid period started to cease, humans started to aggregate into large communities, first kingdoms. When it happens people usually start to delineate their territories to avoid conflicts. It leads to the restrictions of movement of animals and it seems to be the main cause of desertification.
Desertification seems to be reversible, but not with the current methods like planting trees. Because the trees die soon without the necessary ecosystem to maintain them. Animals seem to be the essential key to reverse the desertification, while grasslands and trees seem to be the side effects of large-scale movement of ungulates.
Have you heard about the desert bloom phenomenon? It has happened on different deserts around the globe. Whenever there are floods there, the blooms follow. Heavy rainfall/floods on its turn seem to be caused by large-scale movement of ungulates.
It seems that it is relatively fast for deserts to become green again if the circumstances are right. If only there were no frontiers for animals to move freely…
Let’s make new holidays before celebrating the Earth Day. Let’s call it Earth Week or Earth Month. What if during this holiweeks/holimonth we remove fences temporarily to let animals move around in the Spring (/!\ Attention, there should be not more than 1000 ungulates involved in the large-scale movement in a given area, otherwise there will be floods there in three-weeks /!\). You will be delighted that there will be no heat waves and droughts this summer hopefully.
