Lake Chad
A possibility to turn it back to Lake Mega-Chad
The next lake in the list of drying lakes is Lake Chad. It is situated in the Sahel region of Africa. According to Wikipedia, the lake is drying up because of overgrazing in the area surrounding the lake, causing desertification and a decline in vegetation.
Sahel is the stripe between the Sahara to the north and the savanna to the south. The African Great Green Wall initiative is under progress to stop further desertification. It started in 2007 but only 4% complete as of 2020. $200 mln invested in the project so far. The initiative is mainly to grow plants (reforestation).
To my knowledge no animals are used and it is strange not to see Allan Savory’s method there, because it could accelerate this initiative a lot. With the same amount of money, time and dedicated team, not only Sahel but also the whole Sahara could have turned into wetlands. Lake Chad could have turned into Lake Mega-Chad like it was during the African Humid Period.
Message to African people: Do we continue to be blind or to start to transform lands according to the rules of Nature by using animals for reforestation?
Let’s accelerate the African Great Green Wall and revive Lake Chad!
